The first-ever list of the richest people in crypto world was released by Forbes at the beginning of 2018. While it was based on estimated bitcoin and cryptocurrency holdings, post-tax profits and stakes in crypto businesses, thus not 100% accurate, the existence of such a list shows the way cryptocurrencies impact the financial system and the way we, as a society, start to see money.
Moving from peculiar and underground beginnings to financial safety and maturity, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are the new criteria that can define wealth.
So, who made the top Bitcoin millionaires and who are the richest people in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies? Most of them are founders or CEOs of some of the biggest blockchain companies. While Forbes presents some of these big names (check out the list), we’ll present some other relevant names in crypto-related wealth lists, people that financially went up (and down – some of them) through the past years.
#1 Jered Kenna
As a former U.S. marine, Jered Kenna got into Bitcoin when it was only 20 cents and invested big time in it. His efforts paid off eventually as he became wealthy enough to start his own businesses and invest some more in other start-ups.
#2 Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss
Mostly known for their legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg, the Winklevoss twin brothers are early Bitcoin investors and known as multi-millionaires in cryptocurrencies communities. They founded Gemini in 2015, a digital currency exchange platform.
#3 Charlie Shrem
Sherm is a polarizing and well-known investor in the crypto community. He invested in Bitcoin when he was younger, at a cheap rate, and started Bitinstant. As one of the biggest names in Bitcoin world, he drew attention in 2014 as he was sentenced to prison for his indirect involvement with $1 million in bitcoin transmission to the black market. After 2 years spent in prison, he started from scratch once more. At the beginning of 2018, he joined Particl, an open source ecommerce platform.
#4 Roger Ver
The „Bitcoin Jesus” – as Roger Ver is known, is one of the very first and very few people who encouraged the world to use Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. As the CEO of Bitcoin.com and Bitcoin Cash he is a controversial figure as in April 2018 news appeared the he might be sued for misleading potential Bitcoin investors (as Bitcoin is different from his Bitcoin Cash). Nevertheless, due to his crypto businesses and investments, Roger Ver is also well-known for his donations to charity (we are talking millions).
#5 Yifu Guo
Yifu Guo is seen as one of the greatest inventors and creative minds in the Bitcoin community. He is the creator of the first purpose-built Bitcoin miner. He was a student of NYU and became the co-founder of ASIC builder Avalon.
#6 Tony Gallippi
Gallippi is the founder of Bitpay, one of the most popular crypto payment processor. Bitpay is also one of the first of it kind to establish agreements with big retailers.
#7 Mark Karpelès
Mark Karpelès is also known as MagicalTux – his online alias – and he is the former CEO of Mt. Gox, a bitcoin exchange platform that went bankrupt in 2014. At the time, he was seen as a true villain in the crypto world, as he’d lost then 850,000 Bitcoins from exchanges. Nowadays, Karpelès landed a new job at London Trust Media, as the new chief technology officer.
